I didn't get any feedback on my question about a good serger, so I had to do my own research and, of course, stay within budget.
I decided on the Singer Quantumlock which I purchased from Ken's Sewing and Vacuum Center on ebay. The machine does everything that the more expensive 5-thread machines do including cover stitch, but for considerably less. And you can download the step-by-step handbook from Singer, as threading a serger is more complicated than a sewing machine. So far, I'm very happy with my first serger and I find it to be a time-saving investment...peace!
